Introduction

The CapTech Communication Information Systems and Networks (CapTech Information) brings together experts from across the EU, industry and academia to shape the future of military communication and information systems.

Its mission is to foster research, technology and innovation for secure, deployable and interoperable communication systems - from tactical devices to broadband networks. The CapTech also focuses on information systems covering data acquisition, processing, fusion, analysis, distribution, and presentation.

By pooling knowledge and resources, CapTech Information helps develop robust and efficient communication and information solutions that are essential for crisis management operations and modern defence. It also ensures interoperability, reduces duplication of effort, and aligns innovation activities with the Capability Development Plan (CPD).

Technology Building Blocks

Technology Building Blocks (TBBs) are the specific technological focus areas that guide the CapTech’s activities and research priorities. The activities of CapTech Information are structured through nine TBBs:

  • Management and processing of information from heterogeneous sources: improving data fusion, analysis, and presentation for enhanced situational awareness.
  • Coalition network security and interaction with commercial technologies: strengthening secure, interoperable networks with seamless civil-military integration.
  • Cognitive radio: developing adaptive radio systems for efficient spectrum use and resilient communications.
  • Tactical cloud infrastructure for C4ISR systems: enabling mobile, scalable, and secure cloud-based services for command and control.
  • Electromagnetic support measures (ESM) for communications: enhancing resilience and protection of communication systems against electronic threats
  • Internet of Things (IoT) for defence: harnessing IoT technologies for connected sensors, platforms, and decision-making
  • Information process enhancement with AI and big data: leveraging advanced analytics for faster, smarter decision support
  • Long-range communications: expanding secure communications capabilities over extended distances
  • Software-defined networking: introducing programmable, flexible, and efficient networking solutions

Link to EDA’s capability domains

CapTech Information supports several EDA capability domains, particularly the Persistent and Resilient Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance (C4ISTAR) and Electro Magnetic Spectrum Operations.

By aligning its work with these domains, CapTech Information ensures that communication and information technologies directly enhance operational effectiveness, resilience, and interoperability across EU defence missions.

Join the Community

The CapTech Information meets two to three times per year. All information is shared via EDA’s online collaborative workspace. In addition, the CapTech organises ad hoc workshops on relevant topics.

You can submit a membership request to the CapTech moderator. The approval of the CNC is necessary for becoming a Governmental Expert (CGE) or non-Governmental Expert (CnGE), and for your participation in a CapTech event.
