#AnnualReport - Projects, partners, priorities and procurements – In 2023 EDA reinforced its contribution to European defence. In the Agency’s annual report for 2023, we provide an overview of EDA’s milestones reached and achievements over the year. #EDAturns20 | 🎂 One year ago today, EDA signed an Administrative Arrangement with the U.S. Department of Defense, - the Agency’s seventh AA since its creation. ✍️ EDA cooperates with third countries, organisations, and entities within the framework of Administrative Arrangements, which provide the structure for cooperation between third parties and EDA. Over the years, EDA's relations with third parties have grown, culminating in AAs with five third countries Ministries of Defence and two international organisations. #CFSEDSS | EDA's Consulation Forum Sustainable Energy in the Defence and Security Sector wraps its third phase with dissemination conference & expo. With initiatives to improve #energyefficiency in the military, as well as pilot projects to optimise #energy use in buildings and efforts to electrify transport within defence facilities, Phase III generated over 30 project ideas and 15 research studies. Initiatives also included integrating #hydrogen fuel technology in military vehicles and promote military behavioural change among military personnel. The conference, organised under Belgian Presidency of the Council of European Union. heard from Minister of Defence Ludivine Dedonder, “It is more crucial than ever to fully embrace a spirit of sustainability in our defence policies. Climate change also highlights the need to diversify our energy sources.” EDA Deputy Chief Executive André Denk pointed to the important benefits of sustainability; saying, "more energy sustainability in defence means also less costs, less reliance on fossil fuels, and increased resilience.” The event also heard opening addresses from Paloma Aba Garrote Director CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency, and Paula Pinho , Director European Commission DG's Energy The conference also heard from representatives of DG DEFIS, Joint Research Centre, ISDEFE and EDA's Dr. Constantinos Hadjisavvas Maja Kuzel Ioannis Chatzialexandris Dr. Giorgos Dimitriou #CFSEDSS is a Commission-funded initiative managed by the EDA. #CFSEDSS - The Consultation Forum for Sustainable Energy in the Defence and Security Sector has grown to become Europe's largest defence energy community. This week, EDA is organising the final dissemination event of the CF SEDSS third phase under the auspices of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of European Union and hosted by Belgian Defence. This event marks the end of the Forum's third phase (2019-2024) and will showcase its key results, achievements, and breakthroughs, enabling innovation and fostering collaborative research and projects. This event is combined with an exhibition of the Forum's main outputs and deliverables. Building upon its legacy as Europe's largest defence energy community, the Forum is gearing up for its next phase, focusing on aligning the defence sector's transition with the EU's 2030 energy and climate objectives. 🛰️ Advancing the EU’s defence capabilities in space Organised and hosted by EDA on 22 April 2024, the ‘Space for Defence Industry Workshop’ brought together strategic #space planners, experts from Member States, and stakeholders from European industry. With a specific focus on enhancing Europe's defence capabilities and autonomy in space, the workshop aimed to deepen the understanding of the 2023 EU Capability Development Priorities (#CDP) in the #space domain, their implementation and practical implications. Participants engaged in fruitful discussions on satellite communications, positioning navigation and timing, space-based earth observation, space situational awareness, access to space, and protection of space systems. Industry stakeholders provided their perspectives on addressing capability gaps and challenges identified within the CDP. In particular, the workshop facilitated a deeper alignment between the strategic objectives outlined in the CDP and the priorities of the defence industry, paving the way for more targeted and impactful capability development initiatives. #ASSAI – The first collaborative research and technology project under EDA's Capability Technology Group Space kicks off in Rome.   The new project, Autonomous #Space-based Situational Awareness & Artificial Intelligence, is led by Ministero della Difesa #Italy and co-funded by the Ministries of Defence of #Germany German Federal Ministry of Defence | Bundesministerium der Verteidigung and the #Netherlands Ministerie van Defensie, with a 4M€ budget and a duration of three years.   The project aims at proposing a solution for the space assets self-protection and will improve the European Space #SituationalAwareness (SSA) network through the integration of a variety of ground and space-based sensors and the use of #ArtificialIntelligence (AI) tools. Today the ASSAI project held its first meeting in Rome, organised by Secretariato Generale and hosted by the Italian Air Force General Staff - Ministero della Difesa The project is led by Thales Alenia Space Italy; the consortium is composed of Leonardo DRS Optec and Politecnico di Milano from Italy, Bundeswehr University Munich from Germany and TNO and NLR - Netherlands Aerospace Centre from Netherlands. #EUdefence #defence #cooperation #CAPTECH #CapTechSpace

🤝 Towards common standards in European defence EDA standardisation activities support the advancement of collaborative defence capabilities among Member States, serving as a critical enabler for an efficient European defence market and fortifying the European Defence Technological and Industrial Base (#EDTIB). With the overarching goal of harmonising standards across Member States, EDA’s European Defence Standards Reference System (#EDSTAR) supports European security and defence programmes, organisations, and agencies by providing a central database containing references to “Best-practice” standards (#BPS).
