Armaments Directorate

The Armaments Directorate is charged with stimulating collaboration in European Defence equipment development and procurement. Increasing both the volume of collaborative armaments programmes and the quality of these joint activities is central to EDAs mission of improving Europe's defence capabilities.

The Directorate encourages new collaboration and takes responsibility for coordinating or managing existing programmes. To achieve this, it constantly faces outward, staying in close touch with the participating Members States and stakeholders.

"Some will say that the current situation offers great opportunities to cooperate more and to invest more together, as national budgets might in some cases become too small for purely national solutions. But there is also a clear risk related to the impact of the economic crisis. Member States might fall back in their traditional behaviour of finding purely national solutions, perhaps driven by protecting national industrial interests." Carlo Magrassi, EDA's Deputy Chief Executive Strategy, October 2010.
