Following up on the R&T Joint Investment Programme on Force Protection, European governments agreed (on 26 May 2008) to establish a second Joint Investment Programme (JIP) for research into emerging technologies which might have a disruptive effect on the battlefield.

A Ministerial meeting of the EDA’s Steering Board approved the new two-year programme that uses an innovative structure devised by the European Defence Agency to boost collaborative European efforts on defence Research & Technology. Eleven European countries contribute to the initiative, which is funded by a common budget of €15.58 million.

The JIP on Innovative Concepts and Emerging Technologies looks into technologies such as nano-materials and structures, remote detection and health monitoring.
