MUSIS
SAR Lupe System.
Credit Bundeswehr BWB MUSIS, the MUltinational Space-based Imaging System, is a programme promoted by six European Countries (BE, DE, EL, ES, FR, IT) to ensure future continuation to the cooperation already established in the field of military Earth Observation. In 2011 Poland has joined the MUSIS progamme.
MUSIS will allow its contributing Member States to have access to space capacities by means of some forms of interoperability among those next generation space assets devoted to Earth Observation designed to replace the current Helios, Pleiades, CosmoSkyMed and SAR Lupe satellites.
The programme’s space segment should encompass two Optical and two Radar systems, respectively realised by France, Spain, Italy and Germany. MUSIS entered the Agency in March 2009 as a Category B Programme. EDA is adding value by offering its expertise in dealing with multinational programmes through flexible and collaborative procedures.
In particular, EDA’s role in MUSIS is related to seeking possible interest in the programme by other EU Member States, according to the conditions defined by the MUSIS cMS for new Members. In December 2010, Poland joined the MUSIS project. The Mandate also identifies the Agency as the appropriate body to liaise with Research and Technology projects that could be potentially of interest for MUSIS, such as those included in EU Commission Framework Programme 7 initiatives such as the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) and the European Data Relay Satellite (EDRS).
As a consequence, the EDA will also support MUSIS nations’ interests in any institutional forum where Defence and Security issues related to Space capabilities are discussed, and synergies between civil and military EU Space capabilities are being identified.
